What the Percentage to GPA Calculator does
Grade scales do not map onto each other exactly — a letter grade spans a range of percentages, so converting back out of one loses information. This calculator routes every conversion through a percentage using your chosen scale, and reports the band boundaries so the imprecision is visible.

87% falls in the 87–89.99 band, which is a B+ worth 3.3 grade points, or about 9.16 on the 10-point CGPA scale.
Reading the result
- "Percentage band for this letter" exposes exactly how much precision is lost converting to a letter and back — an 87% and an 89.9% both round to the same "B+", so a converted GPA cannot distinguish them.
- "4.0 GPA" and "10-point CGPA" are two independently-scaled outputs from the same percentage — they are not meant to be compared to each other, only each against its own scale's typical benchmarks.
Assumptions and limitations
- The CGPA conversion factor defaults to one fixed value — using it for an institution that does not actually divide by that factor produces a CGPA that looks precise but does not match that institution's real conversion.
- Converting from a letter or GPA is explicitly lossy and always reports the band floor, since a letter like "B+" could represent anywhere from 87% to 89.99% and the tool has no way to know which.
Common mistakes
- Comparing a CGPA computed with the default factor against a CGPA an institution reports using a different factor, treating the two as equivalent when they are not derived the same way.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an official percentage to GPA formula?
No. Each institution sets its own bands, and many admissions offices recalculate from the transcript rather than accepting a converted figure.
Why does converting a GPA back give the lowest percentage in the band?
Because a 3.3 means "somewhere in the B+ range". Without the original percentage the only defensible answer is the band floor.
