What the Cumulative GPA Calculator does

Cumulative GPA combines every term by quality points, not by averaging GPAs. Prior quality points and this term’s are added, then divided by total credits — which is why a strong term moves a long transcript far less than a short one.

Formula

  • Quality points = GPA × Credits
  • Cumulative GPA = (Prior QP + Term QP) ÷ (Prior credits + Term credits)
  • Needed GPA = (Target × All credits − Current QP) ÷ Remaining credits

Worked example

A 3.4 GPA over 60 credits, then a 3.8 term over 15 credits.

(3.4 × 60 + 3.8 × 15) ÷ 75 = (204 + 57) ÷ 75 = 3.48 — not the 3.6 a simple average would suggest.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my cumulative GPA not the average of my term GPAs?

Because terms carry different credit loads, and because your prior total already represents many terms. A single 4.0 term against 90 prior credits barely shifts the total.

Can I still reach my target GPA?

Enter a target and your remaining credits. If the required GPA exceeds the scale maximum, it is arithmetically impossible — the earlier you know, the more options you have.
