What the Final Grade Calculator does
Your course grade is a weighted blend of the work already done and the final exam. Rearranging that relationship tells you exactly what the final must score to land on your target — and whether the target is even reachable.

How to use it

Worked example
Holding 88% with a final worth 25%, aiming for 90% overall.

Needed = (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96%. Achievable, but it needs a strong paper.
Reading the result
- "Highest possible" and "lowest possible" course grade bracket the whole realistic range before the final is taken, showing how much is actually riding on the exam itself.
- The sensitivity table (course grade for each final score) is useful for gauging what a partial or average performance would net, not just the perfect-target scenario.
Assumptions and limitations
- This assumes exactly one remaining assessment makes up the entire remaining weight — a course with other ungraded work left besides the final needs that folded into "current grade" or the calculation understates what is still available to move.
- The current grade entered is trusted as already reflecting everything graded to date — a stale or partial gradebook figure misstates both the locked-in floor and the score needed.
Common mistakes
- Treating "achievable" as meaning likely rather than mathematically possible — a 96% requirement is technically achievable but the calculator itself flags it as needing a near-perfect paper, which is a different situation from a comfortably achievable 70%.
Frequently asked questions
What if I need more than 100%?
The target is mathematically out of reach. Recalculate against the next grade band down, or ask whether any extra credit is available.
Why is my locked-in grade so low?
Because it assumes zero on the final. With a final worth 40% and a current 85%, the floor is 51% — which is what makes heavily weighted finals risky.
