Weighted Grade Calculator

Combine assignment categories by their syllabus weights into a course grade.

Please note: Grading rules vary by institution, and many schools round, cap or weight differently. Always confirm against your own syllabus or registrar before relying on a result.

What the Weighted Grade Calculator does

A weighted grade multiplies each category score by its syllabus weight, sums the results, and divides by the total weight. That last division is what lets you compute a meaningful running grade before every category has been graded.

Formula

  • Course grade = Σ (Score × Weight) ÷ Σ Weight
  • Contribution = Score × Weight ÷ Σ Weight
  • Headroom = (100 − Score) × Weight ÷ Σ Weight

Worked example

Homework 20% at 95, quizzes 15% at 88, midterm 25% at 78, final 40% at 85.

Weights
20, 15, 25, 40
Scores
95, 88, 78, 85

(95×20 + 88×15 + 78×25 + 85×40) ÷ 100 = 8,570 ÷ 100 = 85.7%, which is a B.

Frequently asked questions

What if my weights do not add up to 100?

They are normalised to whatever they do total, so the result stays correct. That is exactly what you want partway through a term when some categories are not graded yet.

Where should I focus to raise my grade fastest?

The category with the largest product of weight and remaining headroom. The calculator identifies it — usually a heavily weighted assessment you have not aced.
