What the EV vs Gas Calculator does
The comparison rests on cost per mile for energy. An EV’s advantage comes from electricity being cheaper per unit of useful energy and electric drivetrains being far more efficient — but a purchase premium has to be recovered from those savings, and how quickly depends almost entirely on annual mileage and charging rates.

Worked example
12,000 miles a year: an EV at 3.5 mi/kWh charging at $0.15, against a 30 mpg car with $3.50 fuel, an $8,000 premium and $400 of maintenance saved.

Frequently asked questions
Does an EV always work out cheaper to run?
On energy, almost always with home charging. Whether it is cheaper overall depends on the purchase premium and how many miles you cover each year.
Why include charging efficiency?
Because you pay for what the meter records, not what reaches the battery. Ignoring the roughly 10% loss understates EV running costs.
