What the EV Charging Cost Calculator does

Charging cost is the energy your battery needs, grossed up for charging losses, multiplied by your electricity rate. Time is the energy divided by the charger’s power — though real sessions slow considerably above 80% state of charge, which the simple calculation does not capture.

Formula

  • Energy to battery = Capacity × (Target% − Start%) ÷ 100
  • Energy from grid = Energy to battery ÷ Charging efficiency
  • Cost = Energy from grid × Rate
  • Time = Energy to battery ÷ Charger power

Frequently asked questions

Why do I pay for more energy than the battery holds?

Charging is not perfectly efficient. Roughly 10% is lost as heat in the charger and battery, and your meter records all of it.

Why does the last 20% take so long?

Charging power tapers steeply above 80% to protect cell life. That is why rapid-charging advice is usually to stop at 80% and drive on.
