Portfolio profit aggregates every holding into a single result, while the breakdown shows which positions are actually driving it. It is common for one asset to account for nearly all of a portfolio's gain or loss.
Formula
Total profit = Σ Current values − Σ Amounts investedReturn = Total profit ÷ Total invested × 100Weight = Holding value ÷ Portfolio value × 100

Frequently asked questions
Should I sell my losers?
Judge each position on its current merits, not its purchase price. Holding a loser purely to avoid realising the loss is the sunk cost fallacy.
