A test score is correct answers divided by total questions. A curve adds points to everyone's result, usually when a test proved harder than intended.

Reading the result
- The percentage is correct answers over total questions; the letter grade depends entirely on the scale applied to it.
- A curve shifts everyone’s score by the same amount, so it changes grades without changing rank order.
Assumptions and limitations
- Every question is assumed to carry equal weight. Weighted papers need the weighted average calculator instead.
- The letter bands shown are the common US scale; institutions set their own cut-offs.
Common mistakes
- Counting unanswered questions as if they were not asked. They usually score zero and stay in the denominator.
- Applying a curve before rounding rather than after, which can move a borderline score across a grade boundary.
