Mode Calculator
Find the most frequently occurring value or values in a data set.
What the Mode Calculator does
The mode is the value that appears most often. It is the only average that works on categories as well as numbers, and a data set can have one mode, several, or none at all.
Formula
Mode = the value with the highest frequency
Inputs explained

Worked example
Shoe sizes sold: 8, 9, 9, 10, 9, 11, 10.
- Values
- 8, 9, 9, 10, 9, 11, 10
Mode is 9, appearing three times — the size to stock most of.
Reading the result
- The mode is the only average that works on categories as well as numbers — the most common colour has a mode but no mean.
- A set can have one mode, several, or none if every value appears equally often.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a data set must have a mode. Ten distinct values have no modal value at all.
- Reading the mode as typical for continuous data, where exact repeats are rare and the modal value is often an artefact of rounding.
Frequently asked questions
Can a data set have more than one mode?
Yes. Two values tied for most frequent make it bimodal, which often signals two distinct groups mixed together.
