Formula

  • Days = 366 if a leap year, otherwise 365

Worked example

How many days and working days are in 2026?

Year
2026
Week
Mon–Fri

365 days, of which 261 are weekdays — about 2,088 working hours at 8 hours a day.

Reading the result

  • A year is a leap year when it is divisible by 4, except centuries, unless they divide by 400. That is why 1900 was not a leap year but 2000 was.
  • Working days range from 260 to 262 depending on which weekday the year opens on and whether it is a leap year.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Public holidays are not deducted, since they vary by country and often by region within one.

Common mistakes

  • Budgeting payroll or capacity on 260 days every year without checking the actual figure, which can be two days out.
  • Assuming every fourth year is a leap year, which fails at three centuries out of four.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the number of working days change each year?

Because 365 does not divide evenly by 7. Depending on the starting weekday, a year contains either 52 or 53 of some weekdays.
