What the Wall Area Calculator does

A stud wall needs framing timber and board on one or both faces. Sheet count is board area divided by sheet area rounded up, and stud count follows the usual spacing-plus-one rule.

Formula

  • Net area = Length × Height − Openings
  • Board area = Net area × Sides × (1 + Waste %)
  • Sheets = ⌈Board area ÷ Sheet area⌉
  • Studs = ⌊Wall length ÷ Spacing⌋ + 1

How to use it

  1. Choose Wall length unit and Wall height unit.
  2. Enter Wall length, Wall height, Stud spacing and Board width and 2 more.
  3. Optionally add Total opening area.

Worked example

A 6 m × 2.4 m wall, boarded both sides, 400 mm studs, 1200 × 2400 mm sheets, 10% waste.

Frequently asked questions

Why 400 mm stud spacing?

It divides evenly into the 1200 mm board width, putting a stud at each board edge and one in the middle for fixing.
