What the VO₂ Max Calculator does

VO₂ max is the maximum volume of oxygen your body can use per kilogram per minute. It is the single best laboratory measure of aerobic fitness and correlates strongly with endurance performance and long-term health.

Formula

  • Heart rate method: VO₂ max = 15.3 × (Max HR ÷ Resting HR)
  • Cooper test: VO₂ max = (Distance in metres − 504.9) ÷ 44.73
  • 1.5 mile run: 88.02 − 0.1656 × weight(lb) − 2.76 × time(min) + 3.716 (if male)

Frequently asked questions

How do I improve VO₂ max?

A mix of high-volume easy aerobic work and short high-intensity intervals. Most gains come in the first few months of consistent training.

Why does VO₂ max fall with age?

Maximum heart rate declines and muscle mass drops. Regular training slows the decline substantially.

Method and sources

Method. Two published estimates: the heart-rate-ratio method, VO₂ max ≈ 15.3 × (maximum ÷ resting heart rate), and the Cooper distance test.

Assumptions

  • Resting heart rate was measured genuinely at rest, and maximum heart rate is either measured or estimated by an age equation with its own wide scatter.
  • For the distance test, the effort was maximal and evenly paced on a flat course.

Limitations

  • These are estimates from surrogate measures. Laboratory VO₂ max is measured from expired gas; a heart-rate ratio is a proxy for it, and individual results scatter widely around the prediction.
  • Anything that shifts heart rate shifts the estimate — beta blockers, caffeine, illness, heat, altitude, poor sleep — without any change in actual fitness.
  • A maximal-effort field test is itself a cardiovascular stress, and is not appropriate for anyone unaccustomed to hard exercise or with a known cardiac condition.
