VAT Calculator

Add VAT to a net price or strip it back out of a gross price, at any rate, showing the tax amount separately.

Please note: VAT rates and rules vary by country and product category. Check the rate applicable to your situation.

What the VAT Calculator does

Value-added tax is charged at each stage of production but ultimately borne by the consumer. Displayed prices normally include VAT in the UK and EU, so extracting the net amount means dividing rather than subtracting.

Formula

  • Adding VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate)
  • Removing VAT: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + Rate)
  • VAT = Gross − Net

Net £125.00, VAT £25.00 — not £30, which is what subtracting 20% would wrongly give.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove 20% VAT?

Divide by 1.2. A common shortcut for 20% VAT is to divide by 6 to get the VAT portion of a gross price.

Can I reclaim VAT?

VAT-registered businesses can usually reclaim VAT on qualifying purchases. Consumers cannot. Rules vary by country.
