What the Stamp Duty Calculator does
Stamp duty or transfer tax is charged when property changes hands. Most systems use tiered bands where each rate applies only to the portion of the price within that band, though some jurisdictions use a flat rate or slab system where one rate applies to the entire price.
Formula
Tiered: Duty = Σ (Price within each band × That band's rate)Flat: Duty = Price × RateSurcharge = Price × Surcharge rate, added to the base duty

Frequently asked questions
Is stamp duty charged on the whole price or in bands?
Most modern systems use bands, so only the portion within each band is taxed at that rate. Older slab systems charged one rate on the entire price, creating sharp cliffs at thresholds.
Can stamp duty be added to the mortgage?
Usually not — most lenders require it in cash alongside the deposit. Budget for it separately.
