What the Percentage Increase Calculator does

Formula
New value = Old × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)Increase = Old × Rate ÷ 100
Inputs explained
| Input | Unit | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting value | number | Yes | — |
| Increase by | % | Yes | — |
How to use it
- Enter Starting value and Increase by.
- Select Calculate.
Worked example
A $52,000 salary gets a 7% raise.
- Starting value
- 52000
- Increase by
- 7
52,000 × 1.07 = $55,640, an increase of $3,640.
Reading the result
- An increase multiplies by (1 + rate), so a 10% rise is a factor of 1.1. Two successive 10% rises give ×1.21, a 21% total.
Common mistakes
- Reversing an increase by subtracting the same percentage. Undoing a 25% rise means dividing by 1.25, which is a 20% decrease.
- Applying the percentage to the new figure instead of the original. The base of a percentage change is always the starting value.
Frequently asked questions
How do I reverse a percentage increase?
Divide by (1 + rate ÷ 100). To undo a 7% rise on 55,640: 55,640 ÷ 1.07 = 52,000.
