Reading the result
- A mixed number and an improper fraction are the same value written differently: 2 3/4 and 11/4 are identical.
- Improper fractions are easier to calculate with, mixed numbers easier to read. Convert to improper before multiplying or dividing.
Common mistakes
- Reading a mixed number as a multiplication. 2 3/4 means two plus three quarters, not two times three quarters.
- Adding the whole parts and the fractional parts separately without first putting the fractions over a common denominator.
