What the Data Storage Converter does
Two systems coexist. Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) use powers of 1,000 and are what drive manufacturers print on the box. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) use powers of 1,024 and are what operating systems report — which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GiB.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
The manufacturer counts 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides by 1,024 three times, giving 931 GiB but labelling it GB.
What is the difference between a bit and a byte?
A byte is 8 bits. Storage is quoted in bytes, network speeds in bits — which is why a 100 Mbps connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s.
