What the Crop Yield Calculator does

Yield converts to total production by simple multiplication, but the units are the difficult part: bushels are a volume measure with a different weight for every crop, and grain above target moisture is docked because the buyer is paying for water rather than grain.

Formula

  • Total = Yield per hectare × Area
  • Bushels = Total kg ÷ kg per bushel
  • Shrunk weight = Weight × (100 − Moisture) ÷ (100 − Target)

Frequently asked questions

Why does a bushel weigh different amounts for different crops?

Because it is a volume — about 35.24 litres. A bushel of oats weighs 32 lb and a bushel of wheat 60 lb simply because the grains pack differently.

What is shrink?

The weight lost when grain is dried to storage moisture. Sell at 18% when the target is 14% and roughly 4.7% of the weight disappears as water.
