Area Converter

Convert between square metres, square feet, acres, hectares and more.

What the Area Converter does

Area conversion factors are the square of the corresponding length factors. That is why 1 m = 3.28 ft but 1 m² = 10.76 ft² — a common source of estimating errors in construction and property.

Formula

  • Convert to square metre, then divide by the target unit's factor
  • Result = Value × (from factor ÷ to factor)

Worked example

Convert 150 square metres to square feet.

Value
150
From
Square metre
To
Square foot

150 × 10.7639 = 1,614.59 ft².

Reading the result

  • An acre is 4,047 m² or about 0.405 hectares; a hectare is 10,000 m² or 2.471 acres.
  • A full-size football pitch is roughly 0.7 hectares, which makes a serviceable rule of thumb for land area.

Common mistakes

  • Reusing a length factor for area. One metre is 3.281 feet, but one square metre is 10.764 square feet — the factor is squared.
  • Estimating materials in feet when the quantity is priced in square feet, which understates the order badly.
